Welcome to Munchkin Meals! I hope you saw that it’s now going to be a monthly link up on the first Thursday of every month.
Hailey is now 13 months old and still a good eater, though we’ve faced some challenges along the way.
You might remember our battle with introducing milk. Well I’m excited to report that Hailey is fully weaned from banana milk and now enjoys the banana and the milk separately.
Our first challenge of the day is Hailey waiting patiently enough for me to fix breakfast, so she typically eats the banana while I fix it.
She drinks 6-8 ounces a day. This works fine for us.
In addition to the banana, she has some of whatever I have, which happened to be the filling of a homemade breakfast burrito, which included scramble egg, zucchini, onion, spinach, red pepper, potato and sausage.
Another challenge we face is Hailey’s growing preference for flavorful food. Where she used to eat black beans rinsed from the can, she now appreciates a little more flav-ah.
I can almost always count on lemon. Brown rice, kidney beans, broccoli, spinach and carrots sautéed in olive oil with lemon juice and a sprinkle of salt, pepper and garlic powder. It’s always a hit!
Afternoon snacks are varied. She loves it when I pull out the mandarin oranges (they’re like baby crack!)
She also ate half a nutty butter sandwich on a deli thin. She might have eaten the other half, too, but I didn’t give her the chance. Sarah’s nutty butter is so good!
Finding good snack for while we are out of the house is another challenge we face. I almost always resort to a pouch. They’re just so darn easy and don’t create a mess of raisins and puffs thrown everywhere. She usually has one snack in the afternoon, but since I ate the other half of her sandwich, I think she was hungry, so she had 2 snacks instead!
Clearly she was ready to be done with errands judging by that look on her face.
The final challenge I’ve battled with lately is the battle of the bib. It usually happens in the evenings when she is more tired. The only bib she can’t pull off is the Aden & Anais burp bibs, of which I have only one. I use it and wash it almost daily and should probably just buy some more. Anyways, when she can’t pull it off because of it’s snap in the back, drama ensues.
Flailing, crying and an overall meltdown. So dramatic. I have no idea who she gets that from (Mom and Dad, no need to insert your two cents here…). This tantrum continues until I can distract her. With food. She definitely gets that from me
A black bean burger, potatoes pan-fried in virgin coconut oil and avocado.
I’m grateful that we haven’t hit a picky phase yet. I’m sure it will come, but until then I enjoy sharing food with her and introducing her to new tastes.
In related news, and shameless self plug, Munchkin Meals was recently was featured in the Charlotte Observer!
I won’t even pretend I didn’t squeal with excitement when I saw it
Ok, your turn!

Congrats on the feature – that’s awesome! I’m excited to start participating in Munchkin Meals — Xander eats like 5 foods now 😛
Brittany says
Yay Xander!! Can’t wait for you to link up 🙂
Laura @ Mommy Run Fast says
Wow- how cool that you were featured! Congrats! Once a month is perfect- I’m excited to participate.
Yes, enjoy the non-picky stage. L used to eat everything and anything, and it’s getting harder these days… but manageable. I’m cracking up at that high chair picture! Why does it always seem to be the girls who bring the drama?!
Hallie@ChasingHallie says
Molly HATES her bibs too and most of the time we go without one unless its something really messy. And like you the only one that works is the Aden and Anais burp bib. And we only have one too. Time to get another one I think.
Gotta love the drama!

Again, congrats on being featured in a newspaper.
So glad that the transition is now over and she enjoys the milk and banana separate from each other.
Kelsey says
I hear ya on the bibs! We use the washable ones though and it get kept on about half the time. I’m told its just a face (as with all things baby right?)
Erica says
Awwww your such a celebrity! What a great photo to include on the front page! Do you have a link to the article online?
Brittany says
For some reason the link is broken? I’m not sure why- boo! http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2012/11/09/3647462/mom-creates-munchkin-meals-to.html

How awesome about the newspaper article. Congrats!
Jen says
I’m shocked she can’t get off the bib! Wyatt yanks the a+a ones off no problem. Grr.
I’m always so impressed by how much she eats! Thanks for the lemon idea- I think that may be the next food we try so he can get so flavor!
Presley @ Run Pretty says
You are FAMOUS 🙂 I love that she eats almost anything. I hope I’m that lucky.
Erica G says
I love this idea and thanks for the reminder to pick up more mandarin oranges soon! My darling daughter still loves them at age 4.5 and I adore them too!
Brittany from CountingMyCupcakes says
Congrats on the newspaper coverage! That’s awesome.
Beth says
We have to add more flavor these days too and are entering the picky phase. I hope Hailey is more cooperative than Claire! As for bibs, we use a silicone one that snaps on and love it. It was a gift that I didn’t appreciate it’s “awesomeness” until very recently. Easy to wipe off and she can’t rip it off either. “Make My Day” silicone bib if you’re interested.

I’m a longtime reader and rarely a commter, but I wanted to extend my congratulations to you on your feature in the paper! It takes guts to step into doing something new and put yourself out there. If I had a blog I’d link up with you too :). On a side note, we brew our own beer too, our most recent batches were a blueberry wheat beer and a holiday spice. Do you brew from scratch?
Brittany says
Thanks so much Lindsay!
Oh my gosh, I wish I could try your blueberry wheat! I love wheat beer, but David is an IPA man, so most of our batches end up being really hoppy.
We don’t brew from scratch. We buy kits that come with everything prepackaged, though we’ve looked into buying our own grain and hops. How do you do it?

For some reason I have 2 picky kids. My 4 year old is so picky I don’t know what to do. Now my 13 month old stopped eatting all his food except yogurt and mashed potatoes. Im hoping its only cause of his teeth coming in. I just don’t know what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I dug up an old post but hoping you can remember swapping to WM! 🙂 My daughter just turned one and we just started nursing once a day! I quit offering at night but I’m still emotional about it. SUCH a hard decision! We are still nursing in the am which will be the hardest for both of us to let go of bc it’s that snuggly time we have together when no one else is home. My question is about how many ounces H was taking…you mention 6-8 oz in this post. Our pedi rec 20-24 at her 1 yo ck up but I feel that’s an insane amount considering I have an awesome eater (will eat anything) and those milk cals are taking away from food. Only a week in and haven’t figured out how she would eat or drink anything else (water) if she drinks that much milk?!!?!?! Sounds like you felt the same way but I’m thinking if she gets fat somewhere else in her diet all she really is getting from the WM is calcium, fat and that can be gotten from food! Am I crazy???
Brittany Dixon says
Not crazy at all! I’m no professional, but I can tell you what works for us. When I finally got Hailey to drink milk (after having to slowly transition her with banana milk), she drank 15 ounces a day at MOST. I never worried much because she ate tons of yogurt and cheese and other fats (olives, avocados, salmon). Now at 21 months, Hailey has decided she is over milk. She will sip it occasionally, but 95% of the time, it’s just water.
I don’t worry about it at all. She is a great eater and I don’t think milk is the end all be all. I think it is easy for doctors to recommend it because it is a great source of balanced protein and fat and it covers a wide nutritional need for kids that don’t eat much more than crackers. Since you have such a good eater, I wouldn’t be overly concerned, but of course this is just my two cents, so of course check with your doc if you’re concerned 🙂

Hi there! I know this is kinda off topic but I was wondering if you knew where I could find a captcha

trouble finding one? Thanks a lot!

How do you get your brown rice so perfect
Brittany Dixon says
No fancy secret- 1/2 c of rice to 1 cup water/broth, bring to boil, reduce to a simmer and cover for about 30 minutes until all liquid is absorbed. Hope it works for you too!
