For a lot of people, today is a 3 day weekend. It’s the unofficial kick off to summer. It’s the day you must eat watermelon. But I won’t forget why we get to celebrate all of these things- our freedom. And those who fight, continue to fight, and gave their lives for it.
Did you know originally Memorial Day was called Decoration Day, named for the idea of leaving flowers on the graves of Civil War soldiers. Late May was chosen because it was when it was believed flowers across the entire country would be in bloom.
After World War I, the holiday was expanded to recognize all those that died in American wars.
That’s enough trivia for today, but I wanted to take a minute to remind myself and be grateful for those that made it possible for me to enjoy backyard cookouts.
And time with good friends.
And beautiful weather.
And to taste test beers.
And to share kale chips with friends.
And kiddos.
Oh, and to eat watermelon. Lots and lots of watermelon.
Happy Memorial Day. <3

It was so good! We did taste testing to pick the new inspiration for David’s fall home brew. We went to Healthy Home Market and did the make-your-own 6 pack option. The toasted coconut porter from Thomas Creek Brewery was the winner 🙂

We don’t have memorial day here in Australia but have a long weekend coming up in 2 weeks for the Queen’s birthday so I can’t complain.

What a sweet post. People do forget or even just don’t know what Memorial Day stands for. It’s nice to be reminded 🙂

I may have had to spend all day moving/packing…but I definitely made sure to take care of watermelon consumption. Don’t worry about that. 🙂

Do you mind sharing your kale chips recipe? I did a search on it to see if it was in another post so I am sorry if I’m overlooking it… I hope my little guys likes them as much as a Hailey seems too 🙂
Thanks!
