We eat a lot of pizza, but you already knew that. I used to think Boboli premade pizza crusts were the coolest things ever!…until I discovered how easy homemade pizza dough is to make.
Let me show you…
Easy Whole Wheat Pizza Dough
- 1 cup warm water
- 1 1/4 tsp sugar
- 2 1/2 tsp dry active yeast
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 cup whole wheat flour
- 1 1/2 tsp dried Basil (or your seasoning of choice)
- 1 3/4 tsp Kosher salt
- 1/4 cup olive oil + 2 tsp
Start by prepping your yeast. Simply pour the warm water, yeast and sugar into a bowl.
Mix it up and set it aside for about 10 minutes.
It will get to be all foamy, which is good.
Meanwhile, mix your whole wheat flour, all purpose flour, salt and herb of choice in a separate bowl.
Then put the dry ingredients into your Kitchen Aid mixer with the dough hook attachment in place.
*Note* You can do all of this by hand and get more of an arm workout if you’re up for it…
Set the mixer on low, then pour in your yeast mixture.
Then pour in 1/4 cup the olive oil.
Keep the mixer on low for a few minutes until a nice dough ball forms. This can take 3-5 minutes.
Then pour the remaining bit of olive oil into the bowl and coat the dough ball with it on all sides.
Cover with plastic wrap or a towel and let rise in a warm place (I just use the counter…) for 1.5-2 hours.
At this point, the dough is ready to be rolled out, put in the fridge or freezer.
This recipe makes enough dough for 2 medium pizzas, or one large.
You can roll it out thick or thin… we usually go thin. Roll it out with flour, then stick it with a fork.
Bake it in the oven at 400 degrees for about 5 minutes (for thin crust) before pulling it out to top it.
Then, place it back in the oven for roughly 10-15 minutes and it’s done!
To use frozen dough, simply take it out of the freezer and put it in the fridge the morning of the day you want to use it.
See, easy as (pizza) pie!
Do you prefer thick or thin crust?
I usually go thin, but sometimes a hearty thick crust tastes delicious!
PS- Hailey’s birth story will be up later this week 🙂
Gina @ Running to the Kitchen says
I love thin crust at home when I make it, but sometimes thick, gooey dough is delicious too 🙂

I love thin crust or a slightly gooey NY style foldable crust. My mom is getting me a Kitchen Aid mixer as a gift and I can’t wait to test out the hook attachment with this recipe!

Chloe (In Fine Feather) says
Whenever I make pizza at home I always end up with a thicker crust than I want because the dough is difficult to handle – any tips?
Brittany says
I’ve found this version of pizza dough very easy to roll out. If you put it in the fridge, it becomes a bit more tough, but usually I grab a rolling pin and some flour and roll until it’s thin. Sometimes I throw it up in the air, like a real pizza parlor, just to get the full effect 😉

This is really similar to the recipe I use but I never combined the sugar with the yeast and warm water! I got the directions from recipes.com and they just had you throw the sugar in with the dry ingredients…now I can’t wait to make it the right way!
I’m a thick crust girl, but not pan pizza. It’s got to be in between. 😀

Looks delicious! My husband makes the best homemade pizza. I think the secret to his dough is a bit of honey and rosemary.
I cannot wait for Hailey’s birth story! 🙂
Liz @ IHeartVegetables says
Yummm that looks delicious! I like thin crust, because it means I have more room for toppings!!! hehe
I can’t wait to hear the story of baby Hailey!!!
Brooke @ Veggie Table says
For sure, THIN! I’m not a fan of thick crust because it tends to be more chewy – no thanks. Can’t wait to hear the baby story!
Kelli H (Made in Sonoma) says
thin crust for me!
Tina @ Faith Fitness Fun says
I just sent this to Peter. He has been on the lookout for a good whole wheat pizza dough recipe for FOREVER. He will be thrilled…which thrills me. 🙂
Roz says
I MUCH prefer thin crust to thick. And will be trying this sometime soon. Hope all is well with all 4 of you. (that includes Koda!) Take care.

Didn’t you just give birth? LOL 🙂 You are amazing!
Thanks for this recipe too. I hate store bought pizza crusts and mine always seems to fail on me these days.
Maria@La_Piattini says
Thank you for the step by step pictures! Using yeast always intimidates me, but I feel better looking at your steps. I can’t wait to register for a mixer so I can start making more things like this!

Yum! We make homemade pizza a lot, but cheat and use the dough from Trader Joe’s. The rosemary in this dough has inspired me to make my own 🙂

Do you have the nutritional info?
whitney says
if i just used whole wheat flour instead of a combination of whole wheat & ap, would this effect the outcome too terribly?
Brittany Dixon says
Not terrible, but it will result in a thicker, more dense crust that most probably won’t like the texture of. However, it’s still probably edible. Give it a try and see what you think!

This looks delicious! Do you think I could adapt this recipe to work in a bread maker machine? (I don’t have a mixer machine). Thanks!
