I’ve mentioned before when curing a sore throat in one day that I love apple cider vinegar. It really helps me feel better faster. After my last sore throat, I kept drinking it, realizing that it made me just feel good, so I decided to look more into it.
What is apple cider vinegar (ACV)?
ACV is made by first juicing apples and fermenting them to become apple cider. Then it is fermented again with acid-forming bacteria to create vinegar.
Why should you drink apple cider vinegar?
If you’re sick.
I’ve touched on this before, but ACV helps break up mucus. If your tissue contents is thick, yellow or green (ew, I know), you’ll notice it turn thinner and more clear after drinking ACV. It’s best to start taking it at the first sign of a cold.
[Tweet “What is apple cider vinegar and should you be taking a big swig?”]
If you have allergies.
Besides thinning mucus, which can help with allergies, it has also been said that ACV is able to stop or slow a histamine response if taken immediately after exposure to the allergen. I’m NOT suggesting to ditch your epi pen, but I look forward to experimenting with this when my spring allergies hit.
To control blood sugar levels.
I like this one. I eat often to manage my blood sugar because if I go too long, I get light headed, dizzy and downright ill feeling. A 2004 study (source) found that taking vinegar before meals significantly increased insulin sensitivity and dramatically reduced the insulin and glucose spikes that occur after meals.
For weight loss.
A follow-up study (source) to the 2004 study listed above showed that participants that took 2 Tbsp of ACV vinegar before 2 meals each day lost an average of 2 pounds over the four-week period. Some participants lost up to four. Researchers said that results were comparable to the drug metformin, a drug given to help manage diabetes. (source)
It has also been suggested that ACV consumption can aid in clearing up acne, treating diarrhea, curing dandruff and fighting cancer cells.
[Tweet “Apple cider vinegar (or ACV) has some really amazing health benefits, but be cautious.”]
Are there any cautions to adhere to with apple cider vinegar?
YES.
- Don’t overdose. If you are one of those people that can chug a bottle (EW) because if a little is good, then a lot is better, please stop yourself. Excessive consumption can result in lower bone mineral density and lower potassium levels. (source)
- Always dilute. Apple cider vinegar is very acidic and can burn the tissues in your mouth and throat. Always dilute it to a 10-1 (water to ACV) ratio.
- Rinse your mouth afterwards. ACV is potent and can damage the enamel to your teeth. To avoid this, always dilute ACV and rinse your mouth with water after drinking.
What kind of apple cider vinegar should I buy?
To reap the benefits, you need to buy raw, unfiltered apple cider vinegar, preferably organic.
The raw and unfiltered ACV contains the mother, a natural sediment with pectin, trace minerals, beneficial bacteria and enzymes, which will make it appear cloudy, not clear. Similar to kombucha, you’ll see the mother floating at the bottom of the bottle. It’s good for you and yes, you can drink it.
[Tweet “Ready to try apple cider vinegar drinks? Here’s what you need to know.”]
How do you drink apple cider vinegar?
In full disclosure, the taste gets some getting used to, even when diluted. I prefer 1 Tbsp of ACV and 1/2-1 Tbsp honey mixed together in 8-10 ounces of hot water.
Disclaimer
Much of the enthusiasm behind apple cider vinegar comes from anecdotal evidence. There have only been a few, small studies done on its benefits. I am not a doctor and have only gathered this information through extensive magazine reading, googling and drinking it myself. As always, please check with your doctor before proceeding with caution and common sense.
Have you tried apple cider vinegar?
What do you think of it?
Erica says
I tried drinking it for a few weeks (2 T in a huge glass of water) and didn’t notice any real benefits. I felt a bit perkier right after but I attributed that mostly to the shock to my taste buds!
Brittany says
Haha- yes it certainly shocks the taste buds! For me it helps me feel more clear (sinuses), so maybe that happens more over repeated use?
Barb King says
I drink the undiluted acv .i love it cause its so tangy an sour. I put 2 tblsp of the acv
In a glass few ice cubes an the rest ice tea unsweetened.
Wow speak of pucker power i love it
I usually have 2 glasses a day. One in the morning and the other in the afternoon.
I love it straight out the bottle like regular vinegar
Only its acv. I did notice i have had to
Urinate more often an i do feel a little lighter.
Anybody out their that likes sour things
You should try it’s great.
Lee says
I’ve tried it and kind of like it, but just can’t seem to move away from coffee in the morning.
Brittany says
Oh yeah, it couldn’t ever replace coffee! But maybe as an afternoon “treat”? Haha
Jenny says
I’ve been drinking a hot tonic of 1 T ACV, lemon and a bit of stevia twice a day for a few weeks. I have noticed my skin has been really clear and my pesky IBS symptoms (constipation & bloating) have greatly reduced.
I also used it to make salad dressing. ACV, 1 clove garlic and 1T EVOO.
I actually like the taste :). But my husband said it was the grossest thing he’s ever tasted!
Brittany says
Oh I’d love to try that dressing! There are quite a few things that eat and love that David “tolerates” so I know how the husband thing goes 😉
Patricia says
I agree it’s the most disgusting thing I’ve tasted. What can u add to make it not so overwhelming. I need to drink 2 Tb after lunch and dinner each day. Need suggestions. Thanks
Brittany Dixon says
Don’t use more than 1 Tbsp for 8-10 oz of water at a time and add more honey as needed! Good luck 🙂
Debby says
I have been making lemon ginger tea (Bigelow), chilled, with cinnamon, ACV and raw honey. I can drink it this way and barely notice the ACV. I has been really helping my stomach. The tea was helping, but the ACV helps even more.
Angie says
Add a little baking get soda. Just did this tonight, it made it soon tolerable!
Michelle @ Sojourn of Grace says
I’ve had ACV in my fridge for a Filipino recipe but I haven’t been brave enough to try it as a tonic. Well, today’s the day! I started getting a scratchy throat yesterday so I took elderberry lozenges, honey with cinnamon, and now ACV. 1 tbsp of ACV in 8 oz hot water, 1 tbsp honey with lemon juice. It’s actually good! Hoping this works because I have my first post-baby half marathon on Sunday!
Brittany says
If your throat is sore I also highly recommend garlic. It sounds disgusting because, well, it kind of is, but peel a clove, stick up in your mouth and suck on it. Crush it a little, but don’t bite it. Do this for about 10 minutes 3-4 times a day. It has antimicrobial properties that can kill strep and other sore throat bugs. Your breath will be heinous, but I swear by it.
GOOD LUCK on your half marathon- that’s amazing!!
Jen says
I agree. Garlic produces Allicin in your body which benefits healing. I take Allicin max tablets which are made from garlic. When swallowed the stomachs acid doesn’t attack it so the Allicin is produced in the body where as with other garlic supplements stomach acid counter acts it.
Also helps acne, IBS, infections, anti biotic alternative in some cases, increases immune system, sore throats, aids healing, fungal infections, fatigue, dandruff and loads more. I have the Allicin gel for ear infections, adding to:shampoo, cleansers, moisturiser etc.
Jonathan says
The number one cure/ preventative for me when I start to get a sore throat is my Gum tongue cleaner (amazon it). Keep your tongue spotless and couple that with ACV and an actual sore throat will never fully develop. I’ve had strep throat before and most of my sore throats will try to come maybe once a year, but I haven’t had a real sore throat (it’ll only get a little irritated at worst for a day or two) since maybe 2005.
Kathy says
Good post. Where did you purchase your bottle? If you say Target that will save me time looking around. 🙂
Brittany says
Haha, I’ve never looked at Target! I buy in at Healthy Home Market, a health grocery store in Davidson. Here is agreat online option though from Swansons Vitamins- http://www.swansonvitamins.com/dynamic-health-organic-apple-cider-vinegar-mother-16-fl-oz-liquid
Susan says
I’ve been drinking ACV now for about 2wks, yes my hubby hates it. LOL I tried it with water and honey and dreaded drinking it so I tried it with CranGrape, it is amazing. I mix 2tsp acv to about 1/2 cup of juice.
I usually make a 3 serving batch the night before it seems to reduce the acidity a little bit and taste so refreshing. Usually I can’t wait to drink it. Oh by the way I found Braggs brand and Heinz brand at Wal-Mart depending on location you’ll find at least one of them.
Lindsay@Fuel My Family says
I need to look more into this if I get diabetes again with my next pregnancy. I liked to control it through diet alone and not meds.
Amanda says
I actually used apple cider vinegar this weekend for the first time to clear up some *ahem* digestive issues. It worked right away. I had it diluted in warm water with some clover honey. I’m now a believer. I’ll have to try some later to help clear up my cold!
Penny. AZ says
I read about ACV to use to stop coughing after eating. I would cough for over a half an hour. Went to the DR he said I had Acid Re-flux gave me meds didn’t do anything. Come to find out after reading some articles I might not have enough acid. So I took 1TBLS of ACV with 8 oz of water before my lunch & 1 ACV with honey this time just before dinner. I was totally shocked I was not coughing at all. So now this is what I will be taking. I coughed so hard I would get tired and want to go to sleep.
THANK YOU ACV

I’m pregnant and my skin and sinuses are a mess!! I cannot wait to pick up a bottle of this. Of course I googled it, and it’s completely safe during pregnancy. I’m not sure I can’t wait ’til I get to Trader Joe’s this weekend, I might have to spring for a bottle at the local grocery store. I want to look into getting some local honey as well, but I suppose I’ll finish up what I have first. Local honey is supposed to be a really good remedy for allergies, do you have any idea how that works??
Jen says
Ok. I have a cold I can’t shake and I swore I’d never try apple cider vinegar, but you’ve convinced me! 🙂
stefanie says
I’m not super excited about drinking ACV but if it might help with allergies I will have to give it a try!
Rachel Starr says
When I was pregnant the first time, I had wretched heartburn. My mom & sister both insisted I try taking some ACV to quell the burn. The only problem? I despise vinegar. It smells like sweaty feet to me! BUT I was desperate, so I figured I’d give it a try. I couldn’t even swallow a tablespoon of ACV; I gagged & promptly lost my lunch 😛
So as much as I would love to give your little drink a try (I love a good home remedy!) I know I can’t 😉
marcia says
Take aloe for heartburn! It’s the most effective remedy and works quickly. Safe during pregnancy, it’s the only time I needed it. You can find it mixed with mango from Herbal Life and that kind tastes pretty good.
Elena says
I have the same reaction to ACV. I refuse to ingest it cause it smells like rotten vegetables soaked in smelly feet so I tried it as a remedy for dandruff. Unfortunately even just having it in my hair made me vomit immediately. It’s a doomed relationship.
Brittany says
We got some when I had gallstones in hope to try and prevent attacks and break up stones, but alas, I ended up having my gallbladder out because by the time I knew they were there I was too sick to keep anything down and too much in pain to eat. All while breastfeeding a two month old, ugh!
BUT, I have heard of the great benefits of ACV and since I have a bottle just sitting around I’ll have to try a tonic for a few days and see if I notice a difference in anything. 🙂 Very interesting read, thank you for sharing the info!
christina says
Great post. I started putting in my tea with lemon and honey and it’s not bad!
Chantal says
I need to get back to drinking it… it’s just so hard! I was thinking instead of just my hot lemon drink in the morning, maybe a hot lemon-ACV-honey drink?
Liz @ iheartvegetables says
I love ACV! I drink a glass in the morning and I just feel like it wakes me up 🙂 Definitly dilute it though! haha
Danica @ It's Progression says
great post….I like to put acv in the green smoothies I make. I’m never able to taste it!
Diana says
How much do you put in your green smoothies. I make green smoothies all the time. My kids say it looks like I am drink regurgitated salad. : )
Danica @ It's Progression says
That’s cute : )
When I add it to smoothies I don’t measure, but I would estimate that I add about a tablespoon of it.
Elizabeth says
About a year ago I had been taking acv for about a month first thing in the morning with warm water (through a straw) and didn’t notice any real benefit from it, but I do all sorts of weird health food things, so I hardly ever notice a real change… anyway, my daughter and my husband both came down with a terrible 24 hr stomach bug, but I remained healthy. I swear it was b/c of the acv!!! I haven’t been taking it regularly lately, but if I’m planning on traveling, I always take it for a few days to gear up for all the germs at the airport etc.. it’s magical I know it 😉
Kandyce says
My daughter has had flu like symptoms. She has been sleeping in my bed and cuddling with me everyday. I believe I have not forte what she HS because I’ve been taking acv. I only started taking it 2 days ago. It also stopped my heartburn. I take 2 tsp with apple juice.
Eve says
I always tell people to take a swig of that stuff when they start feeling a tickle in the throat. My grandmother and mother always made us take it. Actually a lady at the grocery store was loading up on cold medecine, and cough syrup etc and I told her to have some scv. She kinda looked at me funny, while I explained how well it worked. She said she would try it, but not sure she did…
Parita @ myinnershakti says
So for about 3 weeks in October I drank ACV every morning (diluted in a glass of water). I started because I read somewhere that it helps with acne (all the other benefits were extra). However, my acne just got worse. At the end of the 3 weeks, my face looked horrible (tons of painful zits everywhere). I did a little more research and found out that it can cause already acne prone skin to break out even more (ACV causes your body to purge?). I stopped drinking my morning cocktail immediately, and my face is finally back to normal (took almost 3 months). Sadly, I found out the hard way that ACV and my body just don’t mesh! But just like with everything else, to each his/her own!!
Suzanne says
I wonder if you would have kept using the acv if your face would have cleared up once the bacteria was all purge out.
Erin says
Parita, try cleansing your face with Witch Hazel. Don’t drink it though! Clean morning and evening. If your face gets too dry cut back to once a day. It should help with your acne!
Mandy says
It does purger your body, if you broke out it meant you had some toxins built up, I had the same problem and after a bit my face looks as clear as a baby butt! and soft too. Trust me, it gets worse before it gets better and it will get better!
Sara says
I have been looking everywhere to see if anyone else had an increase in acne- I kept waiting for the purge to finish but find my skin looks a bit better when I stop it or cut back. I’m allergic to a lot if products but I’m dissapointed at the reaction I’ve had taking it as a supplement because I liked the taste in my greens. Lemon juice I’m thinking may have similar properties but it’s never bothered me so it’s back to lemon/ginger in my daily greens. I gave it a good month and frankly I’m just trying to fix my face now. I can’t imagine at this point it’s getting better so I’m going to stop.
Amanda Grace says
Sara, I used to have pretty bad acne too. I started taking zinc and copper supplements. (I found that suggestion in a book called, “All Your Health Questions Answered Naturally” by Maureen Kennedy Salomon. She recommends a whole bunch of things, but I didn’t notice any difference with most of them, so I cut back to just the zinc and copper.) If I remember right, it was 50-100mg of Zinc and 2mg Copper.
I tried cleansing my skin with witch hazel, but it didn’t work for me. I also learned to avoid anything with Salicylic Acid. I use Clinique products now. It’s tricky for me because my skin is dry and oily at the same time, but more dry. The science is that my skin dries out, so it produces oil trying to fix itself, but that contributes to the pore problem. So, I had to find products that would hydrate my skin but were not oily. That was the trick. I love telling people, and I hope it helps you!
As for ACV, I’m drinking it right now for the first time. My birth control pills cause me to get Thrush, and I’ve read that ACV is a much better option than a doctor’s “Band-Aid” prescription. I hope it works for me!
Monica says
Have you considered natural family planning rather than hormonal birth control? I find it interesting that most women don’t know that it is JUST as effective as birth control, without all the nasty the side effects. You should consider it! There are many methods available: Billings, sympto-thermal, Creighton, and Marquette to name a few! It’s AMAZING to take control of your life and understand how your body works so that you can work WITH it rather than against it with hormones. I’ve been practicing for over a year with no problems at all, and I know many who have successfully avoided pregnancy for many years. Just a tip for anyone struggling with the side effects of BC!
Amanda Grace says
Monica,
Thanks for the advice, but I am actually taking the birth control for endometriosis. I thought it TMI for the original post, since the thread is not regarding that. I kind of wish birth control had a different name for those of us who use it for other reasons. Everyone assumes I just want to have carefree sex, LOL!

It also didnt mesh with my body. I startes with 1 tbsp and water first thing in the am for 4 days (no other food changes) and I am so bloated! I havent had a proper BM since I started thaking this stuff. I was so hoping for it to have a different reaction.

I’ve tried drinking it straight, but it is definitely a little too acidic for me (my husband loves it!). I love using it in my vinaigrette for salads!

Love this post, Brittany! ACV is pretty amazing… I’ve started using it a lot more this past year as well.

I love acv! I mix it with pure cranberry juice and lemon juice with stevia to sweeten! I drink it cold in the evening and it reduces bloating for me. I have seen so many benefits in my health since drinking it, including getting over colds faster 🙂 thanks for posting about some of the side effects of taking too much though, specifically the potassium issue. Maybe I am drinking a bit too much lately because I have been craving and eating a ton of bananas lately… Potassium deficiency maybe.
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
Great post! I learned a few things I didn’t know, and also reinforced what I did. I like it for its digestive benefits and I think it really does help with clearer skin! I tend to dilute it with water and add some orange stevia drops, but like I commented the other day, I am going to have to try it hot…perhaps in some ginger tea…
Sonia the Mexigarian says
I have been taking 2 tbsp a day (since january 1) with apple juice and diluted with water and actually do think it’s helping me. Not as much stomach issues and (knock on wood) I haven’t gotten sick! I went two days without drinking it (ran out) and I found my body craving it. And the taste, well, you get used to that 🙂
Nicole says
I have been using acv for about 6 months now and I didn’t think it was helping until I went off it for a few days. I felt stuffy in the mornings and just sluggish so I started again. I swear it keeps the bugs away haven’t got sick all winter. I put 2tsp on one cup of water witha couple squirts of mio tastes like juice, usually first thing in the morning and sometimes in the evening. I have also lost almost 10lbs since starting. Not sure if its just a coinsidence or not. I just like the way I feel when I am on it.

i Just bought BRAGG ACV it is very strong in taste. I tried 8oz water with 2tea spoon on ACP and it was strong so i added Agave and it was a bit better. Then i Tried squeezed Orange juice and ACV and it burned like alcohol lol.
Was i wrong in doing this? and can i drink it throughout the day in sips and gain benefits? ill sip in the morning, for lunch and dinner.
Brittany Dixon says
Haha, yes, I’ll bet adding OJ to the ACV just increased the acidity. I really like 1 Tbsp ACV with 8+ oz of hot water and honey to taste. A squeeze of lemon can help, too, but drinking it while it is warm does the trick for me.
Yes, sipping it all day is just fine, but rinse your mouth after the sips. ACV can damage tooth enamel if not diluted, so drinking some water and swishing it around your mouth afterwards will d the trick.
Dominique says
Hi Brittany if I’m drinking bottled water hoe much acv do I need? 1 or 2 Tbsp
Brittany Dixon says
I’d start small as you adjust to the taste, maybe just 1-2 tsp at first!
Tammy says
I’ve used the ACV a couple of times now to help with a gall bladder problem. Had my first attack and started doing some research and found out about it. A week later, I felt the same symptoms starting and took it right away and it never got bad. Four months later was out of town and had another one with no ACV in sight. Then yesterday had another one starting that came on pretty quickly, took the ACV and within 15 minutes it was gone. I mixed it with a little apple juice and that made it a little more bearable, but it’s still pretty awful to me, but worth getting rid of the pain. I think I’ll try the warm water and honey with the ACV and am considering taking it regularly to hopefully stave off any future attacks!
Sonya says
I just started doing this, this week. I’m learning as I go. I didn’t buy the unfiltered “Mother” type, as I didn’t know any specifics. I will be buying that over the weekend. I have noticed my cravings are nothing like normal and that is about it for now. I cannot wait to find out more though.
April says
I’ve had laryngitis for four days now. I wonder if ACV will help that? I went on antibiotics for a sinus infection yesterday but I don’t think those will help my voice!

I just started taking it yesterday by suggestion of a friend – I’ve had a horrid cold with lots of chest congestion and I suffer from terrible allergies year-round. I put 2T. in a bottle of water and about gagged….LOL It tasted like a nasty, weak beer to me….so today I just put it in a little medicine cup and threw it back! Awful….but I DO feel tons better. I will be trying the hot water, lemon and honey – I just bought some raw honey the other day and I love it. Too soon to tell if the ACV is helping much, but I plan to stick with it…… 🙂
Joey says
I have found 8 oz. of ACV, 8+ oz. of honey and 4 cups of warm water mixed together is tolerable. I keep it in a one liter soda bottle that I have reused and drink about 5-6 ounces per day in the morning before breakfast. Basically an orange juice glass full and it’s cold. I get a strange feeling of clarity is the best way I can describe the effects. I’m hoping for weight loss.

I wish i read your site before I tried a shot of ACV, I smelled it, tried a tiny sip, and it was fine. but the shot burned my throat super bad. I chugged a whole 16oz bottle of water and some juice after. It definitely wouldve cured sore throat and my sinuses if I was have issues. I’ll try your mixture tomorrow morning. ACV is good for your hair too, It balances the pH levels in your hair, making it appear smoother and shinier. It also removes buildup of chemically hair products and helps with dandruff. You just use it as a rinse, dump equal parts ACV and H2O on your hair, let it soak in for a minute or two then rinse. I do this every 2ish weeks, the next day i seem to get so many compliments on how healthy my hair is.

Hi,
I was reading your blog on Apple cider vinegar, and its benefits. I just wanted to share this with you.
Having it with juices is really awful, though different people have different tastes, and i tried it many kind of juices i just could not tolerate it. So, I started adding ACV to my(watery buttermilk with salt curry leaves etc, since we always have it ready in our home, and it doesn’t give a separate taste it goes well with that.
I have been drinking this for a long time. I take 2 tblsps with buttermilk three times a day, before each meal, ie., BF, Lunch and dinner. I even use it for freshen up my face, and apply it along with the conditioner to my hair, and also apply it all over my body wherever I have pigmentation marks.
Although I have not seen any dramatic change either , in my weight or other aspects of my life, I have become used to having it thrice a day. I know it is slow in showing results, so I am continuing with it. Also taking it with butter milk increases my calcium intake too, so one way or other I am bound to see the results.
I think drinking it with 1 liter of water is too much effort on the taste bit , a person may totally be put off and give up, which would be a shame since it is so good for health.
Of course I have heard some people advocating to take it only once or twice in a week, but i have researched quite well in this field and have found, that even some medical websites recommend taking it three times in a day before each meal. After drinking 1 big glass of watery buttermilk, I am sure we would not have place to gobble more food than required. But people keep warning about too much acid, lets see,it would take a few months to see some results, I would keep you posted on my progress.
Had to share it, hope it helps all your followers. BTW I blog at http;//rama-ananth.blogspot.com.
Thanks, Rama Ananth.

I’ve been drinking this tonic every morning for many years,
Full glass of water, add 2 tablespoons Bragg ACV. 1 Tablespoon raw, organic honey, 1/2 teaspoon Stevia, and juice from a lemon, when available (we have a prodigious lemon tree) It almost tastes like Kombucha. It’s so delicious to me.
And I never get sick, and I’ve never really been to a doctor, (except derm,) and I’m in my 60’s. If you drink this tonic, walk barefoot on the grass as much as possible, and exercise on a rebounder, eat real food, practice meditation and EFT for stress, you’ll be doing pretty good,

Hi Brittany,
Excellent post on the benefits of ACV, (and the dangers)
Although one of nature’s great products, I do think in recent years the health benefits have been over-hyped to ‘miracle cure’ proportions, I believe many people think after they drink a glass there acne or whatever will disappear overnight.
Like anything else persistence pays off and it may be some time before any real effects are noticed.
For bad skin in particular Manuka honey is very good and a lot more palatable, in fact it’s yummy, and of course it can be used as face mask because of its bactericidal properties.
Tea Tree and Lemon oil are also two excellent products for the treatment of acne and other skin eruptions.

I use to have horrible gallbladder attacks and nothing helped alliviate the pain. By searching the internet I found that ACV helps during the time of an attack. It sure did! Now every time i feel the attack is coming on, I drink 1-2 tbs ACV and in 20 minutes the pain is gone. I drink a lots of ACV anyways, completely helps with digestion, bloating, water retention after a huge meal. Today I had probably 6-8 tbs, that is kinda normal for me. I like it, hardly delute it but I need to consider to drinking it with a straw at because I don’t want to damage the enamel on my teeth.

I have been Drinking Bragg’s ACV for 5 days now 3 times a day (2 TBL in a tall glass of cold water) I like the flavor. Last night I noticed that I have a strange feeling in my head sort of like the way you feel when you jump in a swimming pool and water goes up your nose, then this morning I noticed that the feeling was all over my head not just up on the top. It doesn’t hurt but feels oddly clear. Do you think this has to do with the ACV?

I have had gallbladder issues for 2 years and just learned last week that ACV can stop attacks. I also read that taking it daily can possibly dissolve the stones over time. I have been taking 2Tbs every morning mixed with apple juice. It’s been almost a week and I feel a HUGE difference! Seriously. I was in the ER a week ago thinking I needed surgery and yesterday I was at the gym going for broke. I feel really good.
Although, I did notice that I have had a little blood in my stool the last 2 days. Reading that it could be that the ACV is killing parasites in the intestines?? Wondering how true this might be and if I should be concerned. (sorry for TMI) It’s not a ton, just enough to turn the water in the bowl slightly red. Researching side effects, this does not come up anywhere. Wondered if you have heard of this happening??

Hi I just recently stated drinking ACV and it helps me to be “regular” i could go on for a week or more without doing number 2 and it was normal for me. But since I started drinking ACV i go everyday sometimes 2 times a day sorry for the TMI I only drink it once a day trying to drink it 3 times a day but I forget. Today I woke up with a cold so I am hoping it helps me with it also. I drink my ACV 4 table spoons in a 16 oz bottle of cold water some honey and cinnamon. I like the weird taste but is not a bad taste for the cinnamon overpowers it and I love cinnamon. Lets see what other kind of results I get only been drinking it for 5 days. Good luck to everyone and hope to read more posts and results about ACV.

I HAVE BEEN DRINKING ACV ABOUT 10 CUPS A DAY FOR 2 WEEKS NOW AND CAN NOT DO THE #2 DO YOU THINK SOMETHING ELSE COULD BE WRONG, AM I DRINKING TO MUCH?

I just got a very bad “BURN” from apple cider vinegar, PLEASE do not put on SKIN, like suggested on many websites, it does not help acne and can give an acid or chemical burn that WILL leave a scar!
anupama sharma says
It will burn if acv is not diluted with water/glycerine/honey……..try only after diluting it properly.

GREAT info. I have an esophageal ulcer, and need to lay off the ACV, while I cure the ulcer. Best, GP

After much research I decided to take the plunge. My first concoction didnt turn out too well but it wasn’t bad. The next time around I tried filtered water, sparkling strawberry flavored water, organic apple juice and 1 tbsp Braggs. It is so delicious and after just trying it I knew I was hooked. I look forward to drinking this every morning and even started drinking it before bed. Hopefully soon I will be brave enough to put in 2 tbsp of Braggs!!!

I’m a singer/musician and caught a horrible virus in my chest and my throat is on fire….been 1 week now and had to cancel several gigs. I don’t know how I found this site, but I refuse to go to a doc, since there’s no cure for a virus, and went to health food store today and bought Braggs ACV. My question is how many times a day to drink this? It doesn’t taste too bad at all mixed with warm water and honey.

No matter how I take it, a few minutes later, I throw it up. very frustrating, any suggestions why this happens?
Amanda Grace says
This is purely an un-educated guess, but maybe it is too acidic for you? Milk is a base. I wonder if you can keep it down if you mix the 1-2T in a glass of milk instead of water….
emily says
After the first signs of some flu symptoms, I’ve been taking “shots” of ACV figuring it’s faster and easier than diluting it and drinking a full glass of water/tea. But I’m worried about how much I’m drinking. What is considered an overdose?
Amanda Grace says
IDK about overdosing, but I really think you SHOULD dilute it. It’s too acidic otherwise and can burn your skin! If you want to give a cold an extra punch, look for an elderberry syrup.
jennifer says
I was having sever abdominal cramping and diarrhea for a week each time about 1 hour after eating. (I am getting this checked out by my doctor). However as I was writhing in pain on the couch it was recommend to me to take a shot of ACV and out of desperation, I did. I was pain free within half an hour. I went and bought a big bottle and take some daily!
Linda says
What you describe sounds like diverticulitis… ACV will kill the diverticulitis infection but you probably will have to quit eating seeds , nuts, and popcorn, including corn of any kind, seeds like poppy, sesame, strawberries seeds. The tiny pieces get trapped in little pockets in the intestinal tract and then they get infected and cause your symptoms. Usually you get a fever along with it. When I get a flare up I usually take garlic pills and Alfa-max pills 3 times a day, 2 each.

I’ve read that ACV could help with gas and bloating when mixed with warm water and sipped slowly. Does anyone know if I could get the same benefits using cool water and drinking it fast? I find that easier to do! thanks!
Amanda Grace says
I would think it should work whether it is warm or cold…. You should try it at the temp you prefer and see if you feel better! Drinking warm water can help settle your stomach, so maybe that’s part of why they suggest it to be warm. I’m not sure of the science behind it all, but if I were you, I’d try it how you want and see what happens. We’re all different bodies anyway, so not everyone will have the same response. And, I don’t think you’d have to drink it fast, LOL, just drink it how you like. Hot/warm drinks are usually sipped, but I don’t think that’s a activation factor for this suggestion 😉 IMHO

Mix with honey and ginger and dilute with COLD carbonated water. DELICIOUS 🙂

I’ve been using acv in recipes for the last month. Has it effected anyone’s menstrual cycle? Completely stopped it or lessened the amount? Sorry if I’m asking for tmi.
Julie says
Yes, I have been having some issues with menstrual cycle. I had to stop drinking the apple cider vinegar because I missed my cycle for 2 mos and finally started when I quit drinking it. I stopped drinking during my cycle. Now I am taking a cap ful each morning with about 6 oz of water and I feel like I am going to start menstrual cycle again. I am probably having some menopause symptoms as well but there is something definitely going on with the acv and my menstrual cycle….
Have you had any other issues since you wrote this?

Lea says
Hello…I also had a change in my cycle after using ACV for about 2 weeks. It was very light for 3 days, and then stopped. Started again a week later only for a couple of days. I stopped the ACV and my cycle went back to nomal the following month. Did you ever find out if there is a connection between the ACV and menstruation? I’m pretty regular, so it was a little unsettling. Thanks, Lea
Dee says
I know this is n old post but ….I have sort of formed a theory from what I’ve read ….since the ACV affects the insulin in your system and less insulin you have the less testosterone you have so this could be what’s affecting the cycle. I am having the same issue and also had a similar issue while taking inositol for my insulin resistance. I’m also having other positive side effects like less excess hair which I also experienced while taking inositol.

I started ACV a few months ago and I am completely addicted. The first things that I started to notice was my hair, it has truly made my hair feel thicker and I have honestly had the best hair days since I started. I take 1 tablespoon twice a day diluted with water, in the morning, when I take my first dose I feel that it gives me a zip and make me a happier person (since I am not a morning person.) I have noticed a difference in my skin, digestive system and helping with maintaining weight, this is the best thing!
Denise says
I was so happy to read that it helped your hair. I just started taking an ACV tonic this week to help with the appearance of small boils. I’ve been plagued with them all my life and finally decided to investigate why I have them. But the hair thing is a bonus! I have hair that has been thinning and falling out little by little over the past 15 years or so. I’m looking forward to seeing if this ACV will have any positive effects on my hair. From everything I’ve read, this stuff just seems to make your body work more efficiently which can never be a bad thing.

Ok so this foreign German lady told me the other day organic ACV is awesome for weight loss, I bought it immediately…. A week later (I won’t go into TOOOO many details) I will say my food is digested and passed within 3-4 hours of consumption…. Before it would be at least 3 days to pass anything!!!!! My husband also agrees with this
Emily says
My mom has a brand that works almost immediately on UTIs. I bought the Kroger brand and all it did was make my stomach feel like it’s burning, even after dilution.

I find a good recipe for those who don’t necessarily enjoy the taste of straight ACV:
1-2 tsp organic apple cider vinegar
8 oz purified water
1 lemon fresh squeezed organic lemon juice
1/2 tsp organic ground cayenne
1 tbsp local organic honey
750 ml cupcake flavored vodka
4 fl oz dextromethorphan cough syrup (cherry Robitussin is my favorite)
1 bottle 5-hour Energy (grape or berry dependent on your tasters)
Really helps me get going in the morning/evening. actually like the taste 🙂
alicia says
I took a tablespoon of ACV and dropped it directly in the back of my throat so that I couldn’t taste it on my tongue. I nearly choked to death. I could not breath, I started gasping for air and felt as if I was going to pass out. I finally gained control and was able to take a breath. I believe I scarred the back of my throat. The rest of the day my throat felt as if had been scraped. DO NOT DRINK ACV ALONE! There should be a huge red alert on the bottle.
Kelly minyard says
I agree, it’s quite soothing to throat irritation and chest congestion! I drink mine with a straw to combat both the tooth enamel erosion (my dentist was appalled that I let straight vinegar touch my teeth, and it did some damage to them before he gave me the straw suggestion) and to help with the taste. Pair it with some honey, sea salt, and stevia and it’s actually something I look forward to!

Hi everyone, I recently purchased my first bottle Braggs Unfiltered Unpasteurised Raw Apple Cider Vinegar and I am enjoying the sour taste so much that I cant seem to stop taking it in… straight, with water diluted, in my green smoothies, as salad dressing, as condiment with my rice and lentils and even diluted on my skin as a toner. I think I consume ACV daily about 100 ml that is 3 to 4 ounces and I feel great. The moment I feel light headache coming up I realize I have to drink more water, because I read that headache is the most common symptom people get from detoxing. When you support your body through a cleanse, those cells have the opportunity to release more stored toxins, pathogens and waste thus causing a headache. It can also be the result of the die off of sugar, yeast or caffeine. I would like to communicate with anyone who enjoys and benefits using raw unfiltered unpasteurized ACV in these high amounts.

I found that one website stated, “take a break every now and then to give your body a rest. You don’t want your body to get used to it and have the effects diminish over time. ”
Can you tell how long I can drink this before taking a break and how long should the body rest before I can begin again?
Thanks

I did not do my homework on how to take ACV and took about a 1/2 tsp without diluting it (and also it was not raw). I thought would be okay to do as I figured I would have a similar amount in salad dressing on a salad, but I have had a burning sensation ever since. Has anyone else done this? Will it get better on its own or do I need to take something?

I took the apple cider vinegar raw, and now I think I have burnt my throat! Can you recommend any home remedies other than honey? I am drinking lots of fluids and green tea.

I used to believe in the healthful effects of ACV but wasn’t really sure. I had bad diarrhea for over 2 weeks and went to my doctor. He sent me for tests. Blood and stool tests. They found nothing and I had still had bad diarrhea. Did some research and while some consider it controversial, I read about ACV and it reminded how it eliminated my heartburn several years ago. Tried 1 tbsp before my first meal and as crazy as it sounds, later that day I had a semi hard movement. I continued doing the same before meals and within 2 days my movements are fully back to normal. I really don’t know why but I’d much rather drink a little ACV then take some big pharmaceutical company drug. I do believe it Amy have something to do with too little acid in my stomach for proper digestion but that’s just what I’ve read.
Either way it worked for me and I feel soooooooo much better. Thanks ACV.

I’ve started using the ACV/honey combo diluted in warm water for about 2 weeks now, every morning on an empty stomach and noticed an increase in fatigue. I’m always sleepy and feel exhausted… any suggestions? thanks!

Please research the following and add to your list of cautions, as people need to know this info: consuming a highly acidic diet can cause a person to develop one or both forms of reflux (esophageal-mainly characterized by heartburn) and/or (airway/respiratory-characterized by LACK of heartburn and sore throat, lump in throat, shortness of breath, hoarseness, cough, difficulty breathing and/or swallowing, even problems with ears, nose, sinuses). The only prevention and cure is . . . an alkaline diet with no foods/drinks below pH 5 (initially), then a maintenance alkaline diet with no foods/drinks below pH 4.
Books & websites by the world’s 2 leading Board-Certified ENT authorities in reflux (who have treated thousands of patients & done extensive reflux research over many years) will explain the science of why an acidic diet is likely to cause & perpetuate reflux, how the American diet is slowly becoming more acidic (with an increasing rise in reflux) and why diet (not meds) is best cure:
Jonanthan Aviv MD: Acid Watcher’s Diet; entandallergy.com/doctor/jonathan-aviv-md
Jamie Koufman MD: Dropping Acid, Chronic Cough Enigma, Dr Koufman’s Acid Reflux Diet; voiceinstituteofnewyork.com/category/all-posts/
Look up the above books on Amazon and read the comments.
I speak from bitter experience: I didn’t used to have any reflux (as verified by 2007 ENT & 2011 upper GI exams). But, based on online articles lauding the virtues of increasing stomach acid, I fell into the trap of consuming diluted ACV and then lots of probiotic-laced kombucha tea to “boost” what I assumed was decreasing stomach acid as I aged (I am a leading edge Boomer), plus I am a (recovering) chocoholic and spicy food lover. I have developed virtually all the symptoms of airway reflux. I have never used the meds; the diet worked immediately.
Once a person has developed reflux, it is highly likely they will never be able to routinely tolerate dietary acids below pH 4 / 5 for the rest of their life (without triggering a return of reflux). And, there are safer, non-acidic ways of getting probiotics than kombucha tea — supplements.

I’ve just started doing this to help with my blood sugar levels. I have about 1cm of ACV in 500ml of Sparkling mineral water. Tastes just like regular apple cider, though the smell is still a bit strong.
Do you think the 500ml of sparkling might dilute it too much?
