I’m so glad it’s Monday. What a weird thing to say, huh? Well, this weekend, particularly Sunday was rough on me. It started Friday when my throat started hurting. A summer cold? That’s odd.
Saturday morning it felt a little worse. We stayed around the house, bummed and tried a new recipe for protein pancakes.
It’s a keeper.
When Hailey woke up from her nap around 2, I couldn’t stand to waste such a gorgeous day. So I sucked it up and we headed out on the lake!
It was our first real summer boat outing, complete with sunscreen and bathing suits.
And swimming!
It was Hailey’s first dip in the lake. Though hesitant at first, she quickly warmed up and enjoyed “swimming” (being pushed back and forth) between David and me.
We were having such a good time we opted to stay on the lake and try a new place for dinner.
The Blue Parrot is new to the area. They don’t have many slips for boats, which makes me hesitant to give away our new awesome secret spot, but I must admit, we loved it!
The atmosphere is lively, the staff is friendly and the music was almost all Jimmy Buffett. David was in heaven. Hailey loved it, too, and David helped her ‘twirl’ to the tunes.
The food was excellent.
But unfortunately by this time I was starting to fade. I felt achy and my throat was killing me. We scooted home afterwards and crashed on the couch.
I woke up at 3:45am, unable to swallow and barely able to breathe. I HURT. I wasn’t able to go back to sleep, so Koda kept me company on the couch until 10:00am came and I made my way to MinuteClinic.
Confirmed. Strep throat.
I’m all for natural remedies, but this called for meds. And lots of couch time.
Yesterday consisted of the following-
- 6, yes SIX, episodes of Friday Night Lights
- 4 Segments of TED talks on food and nutrition
- 3 Sailing videos
- 2 naps
- 2 bowls of hot and sour soup
- I bowl of rice with salsa
- 1/2 a pint of coconut ice cream
David had to work and without family nearby I gave in and called a sitter to help me out for 2 hours. I regret nothing.
Luckily after a day of meds and a good night’s sleep, I’m feeling much better. I have no clue how I contracted strep, but I’m just praying David and Hailey don’t get it!
Have you ever had strep?
Lynne says
Hi Brittany,
I’ve been reading and lurking on your blog for a short while now and pop in every now ant then.
I had to comment having just turned the corner from having strep, the same as you! It was miserable and I didn’t get to the doc right away. I’ve never had strep before and have no idea how I got it either. Maybe it’s going around? But I live in New Jersey. Still, coincidental? Feel better soon!
Brittany Dixon says
That’s so funny (well, more miserable than funny I guess), but I’ve from a few other people that they’ve gotten it recenty. So weird! David’s guess is I got it from the plane last Sunday. Who knows. I’m just glad you are feeling better and I’m on my way to better. Strep sucks! 🙂 Thanks for popping in!
Erica says
Get strep once a year – no bueno! Hope you feel better soon!
blackhuff says
Ouch! Glad you’re feeling better. There is nothing worse than a summer cold/strep.
Karen says
Total bummer that you weren’t feeling very good. Happy you are doing better. I haven’t had strep in a super long time, knock on wood but I know it’s horrible. Hope you have a great week.
Christina says
Glad you are feeling better! In late March, my husband had strep, our daughter had strep/pink eye/ear infection, and I had laryngitis – all at the same time! Darn daycare germs!
Even though you were sick, your Saturday looked spectacular! I had no idea Lake Norman was such a happening spot! 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
Ohhhhhh my gosh, I cant’ imagine the whole family being down and out like that. I was dramatic enough being the only one sick; you’re a rockstar for taking care of the entire fam!
And PS- yes, Lake Norman is quite happenin’! Even more so if you’re younger and wilder than us 🙂
Lindsey says
I had it once in University and it sucked, I hope your feel better soon!
Tiff @ Love, Sweat, and Beers says
Oh no! Get well soon. Strep is dreadful. I’m glad you at least got to enjoy part of your weekend though. Your post makes me miss our boat (we sold it this spring… wahhhhh)
Hanna says
I’m contemplating moving to a lake now that I see how awesome it looks! 🙂 The last time I had strep was when my dauther was 8 weeks old and it was my 2nd week back to work from my maternity leave. It was the worst. The anitbiotics kick in quickly though! I hope your family stays healthy and you feel 100% better soon.
Jen says
AH strep is the worst! I’m so glad you got meds, though. I had it misdiagnosed in college, strep ended up attacking my heart, and I ended up super sick and needed my tonsils taken out. Feel better!
Brittany Dixon says
Oh my gosh, Jen, that’s scary! So glad it all turned out ok. Glad I got some meds, too!
char eats greens says
Glad you feel better and good call on the sitter!!!! I’ve never had strep but I can’t imagine it being too pleasant haha. I’m glad you had fun on the water though!!! Hailey seems so “go with the flow” – love that!!
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
Ugh, what a major bummer, especially during the Summertime!! I hope you get to feeling better :).
Danica @ It's Progression says
ugh I’ve had strep twice in my life and it really knocks you out. Don’t try to get back into the swing of things TOO soon – it makes you run down and the more you rest now the better….get well soon!
Maria says
Summer illness is the worst! I used to get strep a lot as a kid, but (knock on wood), haven’t had it in a looong time. Hope you feel better soon!
Also, I watched Saturday Night Lights on Netflix a while back. I want to marry Zach Gilford even though I’m pretty sure he’s a lot younger than me. OMG, I’m turning into a cougar. (Nope, just checked, older than me. Booyah.)
I didn’t get much sleep last night.
Brittany Dixon says
I just googled to make sure you weren’t a cougar and -wahoo!- you aren’t! However, it would make you a homewrecker. The man is married. Shaking my head… 😉
Ashlee@HisnHers says
Oh man I hope you feel better soon! I get strep at least 2-3 times a year…I am told I am a “carrier” and desperately need my tonsils out. Who has time to be out for a week to get your tonsils out?!
Brittany Dixon says
What the heck makes someone a carrier? How miserable! I’m so sorry you get it so often; I can’t imagine. And I agree, who has time for a whole week of vacation, much less getting tonsils out? Ick!
Sarah @ The Smart Kitchen says
I don’t want to answer that question because it is impossible to knock on wood in a digital world. But…
Anyways, I am sorry you were sick! Looks like you know just how to take care of yourself. [What can’t hot and sour soup and ice cream cure? I mean…really.] Also, Blue Parrot looks like SO much fun. I want to go there. With y’all, obviously. Because y’all look like fun, too. 🙂
Beth Sheridan says
SO sorry you’re sick! My Rylnn had strep about a month ago and it was AWFUL! I have no idea how he got it and no idea how we managed not to get it, but I’m just glad it’s gone!! Get better soon 🙂
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
Boating is so much fun! Definitely one of my favorite summer activities!
Ugh, strep is the worst!! I got it ALL the time when I was younger, then I got my tonsils out, and have been strep free ever since. I hope it passes quickly for you!
Elizabeth @ my neon running shoes says
Feel better! Looks like a fun weekend despite strep 🙂
Giselle@myhealthyhappyhome says
Oh no! So sorry you got sick 🙁 Being sick over the weekends and during the summer is the worst! I haven’t had strep in years but did get the flu twice this year. The most recent being the day after my son’s second birthday and it hung on for over a week! Thank goodness it waited until after his party though! Hope you feel better soon!
Brittany Dixon says
Flu for a week?! I can’t even imagine. You forget how good it feels to feel good until you’re sick enough to not get off the couch! Hoping for less flu for you this year 🙂
Sarah says
Sounds like you made the right call getting a babysitter so you could rest up and get better quickly!
Linda says
Can you tell me where you got that lifevest/float that Hailey is wearing in the picture on the boat? That looks great! Thanks!!
Brittany Dixon says
The swim vest that looks like arm swimmies and a chest piece is called a puddle jumper. We found it at Target and though it’s a little big for her still, it’s the favorite so far. We also have a couple regular life jackets as back ups 🙂
Parita says
I got strep so often as a kid that I had to get my tonsils taken out. *Knock on wood* but I haven’t had it since! Hope you feel 100% better soon!
Amy @ {Life to the Full} says
I’ve only had strep once and it was miserable! There’s definitely no shame in calling a sitter. Coconut ice cream sounds like the perfect strep remedy 🙂 I’m sick right now, too, and could use some of that! haha
Tara@PNWRunner says
Oh no! I am so sorry you have strep. I hope you recovery quickly. I haven’t had strep before, but I’ve had sore throats that have been miserable. Eat lots of ice cream/froyo!
Jan @ Sprouts n Squats says
Not good at all I hope you feel better soon!
My boyfriend and I have only just started watching Friday Night Lights but really enjoy it.
