So I decided I’d track our grocery budget publicly through August (week 1, week 2, week 3, week 4). I must have gotten in a habit because after meal planning and shopping, I came home and snapped a bunch of pictures again! So how about I share one more week?
The plan-
Sunday– Cookout with Friends (bring green bean salad)
Monday– Spaghetti Squash and Meatballs
Tuesday– Chicken Tortilla Soup
Wednesday– Braised Cod with Summer Vegetable Couscous
Thursday– Homemade Chick-fil-A Sandwiches with Roasted Broccoli
Friday– Homemade pizza
Saturday– Out
Breakfasts- Frozen sandwiches, egg and avocado toast with bananas, oatmeal
Lunches- leftovers, salads, tuna fish
Snacks- Laraballs, carrots, hummus
My spoiled streak ended since David had to work, so I brought Hailey grocery shopping with me. This meant we only made it to two stops, but she did pretty well (when bribed with dried mango).
Our first stop was Healthy Home Market in Davidson.
Organic sour cream $3.39, organic baby dills $5.39 (I plan on making pickles soon!), Eden Organic black beans $2.39, Puffins cereal $5.29, organic all purpose flour $3.99, mushrooms $1.96, organic craisins $1.03, organic dates $3.59, cashew pieces $3.57
organic broccoli $3.99, organic romaine $2.99, organic tomatoes $2.89, organic green peppers $4.94, organic onions $2.47, organic red pepper $2.73, organic zucchini $4.92, organic garlic $0.45
Ezekiel Sprouted Wheat Bread $4.99, Ezekiel 7 Grain English Muffins $4.49, turkey sausage $5.59, Chicken $10.17
Healthy Home Market Total- $82.88
Next, we hit up Harris Teeter. Though I certainly have my favorite stores,I feel ridiculously spoiled having so many great choices so close by. Between Harris Teeter, Healthy Home Market, Fresh Market, Food Lion, Target, Josh’s Farmers Market and a nice Lowe’s Food I have a lot of options. I’m going to lose my mind when Whole Foods arrives here next year.
cilantro $1.99, bananas $1.42, fresh mozzarella $4.99, blue cheese crumbles $3.99, 4 avocados $3.34, cage free eggs $8.38, Cabot cheddar $3.35, lime $0.60, Cedar’s organic hummus $3.49
Pizza sauce $1.29, organic tomato paste $0.99, Rotel $2.00, wild caught cod $7.99, garlic powder $5.49, coffee $11.46, wheat buns $2.99
Harris Teeter Total- $62.73
Total Weekly Grocery Cost: 145.61
Back home, I made a batch of frozen breakfast sandwiches (PS- I’ve edited them to add that Ezekiel brand English muffins are highly recommended! I tried to switch brands once and they turned out soggy when reheated. Ezekiel brand muffins do not get soggy).
I also prepped the broccoli and romaine, made the meatballs and whipped up the laraballs (recipe coming this week).
And just like that, we’re set for another week!
What is one thing you find yourself buying every week?
Karen says
You always do SO good!! I find myself buying chicken, spinach and almond butter every week. I drink a green smoothie pretty much everyday so I need a lot of spinach for those plus I use spinach in a lot of my meals. We eat chicken about every other day, sometimes everyday so we go through a lot of chicken. Almond butter, well, between K & I we go through a lot of it. 🙂
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves says
Sounds like a great week of meals ahead! (Also, Peanut Butter Puffins is my favorite cereal ever.)
This week we’ll probably be having lots of salmon and I was thinking of making some curried chicken salad with the leftover chicken from Labor Day!
Brittany Dixon says
Curried chicken salad sounds delicious! Do you have a good recipe you could share?
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves says
I’ll probably post it soon!
Alison @ Daily Moves and Grooves says
It was very similar to this one: http://www.100daysofrealfood.com/2013/03/15/recipe-curry-chicken-salad/
I added dried cranberries, black pepper, and a little spicy mustard though.
Lindsey says
Apples, bananas and spinach seem to make it on our list every week.
Christina says
Bananas and avocados are on our list every week! Looking forward to the Laraball recipe!
Ashley @ My Food N Fitness Diaries says
We buy bananas, bread, spinach, and milk pretty much every week!
Heather @ What Does She Do All Day? says
Not a week goes by that I don’t buy bananas. I just got back from the grocery and I never thought to prep the broccoli ahead of time like that. And I suppose I should start storing my herbs in water, especially if I don’t plan on using them right away.
Brittany Dixon says
I don’t always prep broccoli but I usually appreciate it on the night I’m going to use it. Not that it’s a pain, but it’s like having a bag of pre-cut ready to go which is pretty nice 🙂
Hannah @ CleanEatingVeggieGirl says
I feel like I haven’t eaten spaghetti squash in ages!! That is about to change with Fall rolling around and cheap squash prices :).
Brittany Dixon says
YAY for cheap spaghetti squash! I’m looking into more ways to use it because I like it so much! Any ideas?
Elle @ The Clean Project says
We buy bacon, eggs, spinach and crackers every week. I can stock up on other things, but those things we can’t seem to keep on hand more than a week.
Sarah says
I always find myself running out of coconut milk and bananas. Every.single.week. I wish Costco would start carrying coconut milk so I could buy in bulk and be done!
ps I’m happy to see that you stopped calling them “Mom McMuffins”… they are for your husband after all and you’re not his mother. I think you should them Hot-Wife-McMuffins 😉
Brittany Dixon says
Haha! Mom McMuffins is just fun to say! Though hot wife sounds more appealing, no? 😉
Sarah says
How about, “Hot Mama Muffins!” it’s the best of both worlds 🙂
Danica @ It's Progression says
Every single week bananas, eggs, greens, carrots, and almond milk are on the list. They’re just things that we always have in our kitchen!
Ali says
I buy almond milk and bananas every single week. I feel like in the summer, we eat salad all the time and in the winter we eat chili or stew all the time.
Anastasia says
I always buy Ezekiel bread and tortillas, avocados, and eggs. I should put any herbs I buy in a glass of water too. I never thought about it, but it’s a great idea.
char eats greens says
Ok, let’s set my move in date, so that you can start planning an extra meal ;). I REALLY need to get into the practice of doing this. It takes 21 days to change a habit and that’s really all I need to do…change the meal planning habit (from virtually none to all for it!). Looks like another good week you have going :).
Giselle@myhealthyhappyhome says
Love how organized your fridge is! I try to keep mine in order but within a few days it’s a mess! I think we just need a new one 🙂 Almost every week I purchase avocados, bananas, apples and greens. Fresh produce goes fast in our house as I’m sure it does in yours too!
Julie says
Love all the detailed pictures and how you write your meal plan!
Beth says
I love ezekiel english muffins, especially the cinnamon raisin – my toddler loves them, too. I like to top my with almond butter, mashed banana and honey.
We’ve been doing a CSA over the summer (our 5th year and we love it). It comes with the most amazing eggs (1 dozen), but I find I still need to run out midweek to buy more eggs as we’re always running out.
Ana says
Trying your chick fil a sandwiches tonight. Any special way you store and reheat leftovers? Will they last a week in the fridge? Do they get soggy when you reheat? Thanks for any tips! Excited to eat them tonight!
Brittany Dixon says
They really are best when you allow them to marinate overnight, then eat fresh from the oven. I saved some from last night and David ate it for lunch today though. I simply stuck it under broil for a few minutes on each side to crisp-up the coating, which had gotten soggy. Bottom line- best fresh, but can be eaten the next day if necessary 🙂 Let me know what you think!
Julia G says
Do you eat the puffins just as cereal or are they for a recipe? 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
I got them for a quick-grab snack for Hailey for the week… then Koda ate them :/ haha!
