I can’t believe I’ve waited so long to dive into it, but now I’m anxious to play catch up so I can show you my growing belly! I promise to move through these quickly so we can get to present day.
Like I mentioned, I’d been tracking my cycles so I had a good idea of when I ovulated in August. Then began the two week wait. The month prior, I has felt every pregnancy symptom is the book- fatigue, nausea, food aversions, you name it. Mental much?? This time I didn’t feel much. Maybe a slight cramp here or there and a little bloating, but nothing much. The only thing I found weird was that about 10 days past ovulation (still testing negative on pregnancy tests), I realized wine wasn’t tasting as good to me. I’d slowly sip one glass and barely finish it. Say whaaaa? I should have known right then that something was WAY off.
The morning of 13 days past ovulation (for those new to fertility talk, it’s the best way to keep track of timing that I found), I took a test. I squinted and brought it to my nose. A possible faint positive?!
I couldn’t quite tell. I drank a decent amount of water and didn’t allow myself to go to the bathroom. I know, a very healthy habit, but I wanted to concentrate any hormones that might be in me.
That afternoon, I took another test and sure enough, big fat positive!
I did a little dance by myself in the bathroom; I was over the moon! I immediately tried to figure out how to tell David. I always imagined something big and elaborate, but when the time came, I was just excited and wanting to tell him.
I decided a little celebration would be in order. I did a little shopping and ended up telling the uninterested cashier I was pregnant because I couldn’t keep my giddiness inside. He asked how far along I was and I said oh, about a day. He gave me the world’s greatest crazy lady look, but I couldn’t have cared less.
When David got home and we put Hailey to bed, I told him we had reason to celebrate. I pulled out a 6-pack of fancy mix-n-match IPAs for him, then proceeded to pull out ice cream…. then pickles.
Between the goodies and my goofy smile, he got the message pretty quickly.
A few big hugs and giddy really’s?!? later, we settled into the couch, talking excitedly about the craziness life was going to become and possibilities of what our new child will be like.
For the next week I did my classic ‘I’m not really sure I’m pregnant because I don’t feel anything yet’ dance that David insisted I also did while pregnant with Hailey. I tried to feel things, but besides a slight headache here and there and extra short nap or two, I just didn’t feel like it was real. I kept up my normal eating and exercising, figuring I’d better squeeze in veggies while I could!
The following week, things began to get a bit more real. Smells started bothering me. Koda smelled revolting. I had hints of queasiness here and there and one day my entire right arm felt numb and tingly. I noticed my bra feeling more snug and actually discovered a lump under my left arm. I freaked out immediately, picturing breast cancer. Like I mentioned, I’m driven driven by illogical emotions at times, but I’d never had anything like it. I quickly called my friend Katie, who is an obgyn, and she assured me that cysts that pop up quickly are often hormone related.
By then, my nerves had kicked in and I decided I needed some confirmation on pregnancy and the lump being benign. The next day I booked an appointment to go into my doctor. I made the appointment on the day I estimated I would be 6 weeks along. Being that my parents were visiting the following weekend, I loved the idea of a little confirmation before sharing the news.
It turns out that my math might have been a little off on how far along I actually was, and thus began my first anxious wait of pregnancy. To be continued!
If you’ve been pregnant, how did you tell the dad-to-be?

Oh, I CANNOT wait to hear the rest of the story. I so badly wanted to surprise Bob but he kept a close eye on me and my “cycle”…ha-ha. When I was two days late, he said, why hasn’t it come yet then proceeded to buy a pregnancy test…bummer!! If we have another one, I am going to try and surprise him that’s for sure…LOL!

I asked Chris if he was going to be able to take some time off at the beginning of December which was supposed to be an insanely busy time for him. He got all frustrated saying he wasn’t going on a trip then. I asked if it would make a difference if I was in the hospital you know having a baby. He got it then haha.

My husband was already at work when I took my test and I didn’t want to tell him over the phone. On my lunch break, I rushed out and bought a Big Sister shirt for our daughter. After work, I quickly dressed Amy in the new shirt and started recording with my phone camera. I told Amy to twirl around and show daddy her new t-shirt. I’m so happy I recorded his reaction, he read the shirt out loud and when it clicked he looked at me like “wait…are you serious!?!?” Then he went through every emotion from shock to excitement to worry and finally being very happy.
I can’t wait to read the rest of your story 🙂

My husband and I weren’t even “trying” yet, but we had just stopped “preventing”. I was told that because of my age (33 at the time) and how long I’d been on birth control (15 years), it would take at least a year to get pregnant. Two months later, like you, alcohol started tasting terrible – soapy!
My husband has a Harley Davidson motorcycle, so I went out and got a Harley onsie and when he got home from work, we talked about his day a little, then I told him I had a present for him and gave him the onsie. He looked at it blankly for a loooong time and I actually had to say the words “We’re pregnant” before it really sunk in! It was the best moment! He kept saying “I thought it would take a year!”.

I am totally boring and could’t wait both times to tell him as soon as I realized with both pregnancies… With Avery, we had just come back from the beach (where I took a pregnancy test after being snippy on a couple of occasions and not knowing why, except I kept saying , I guess this is PMS when you don’t take the pill anymore??? it was negative). Then I went to work that monday and we had a new computer system in place and I had a full schedule. I bit my tongue all day and then when I got in the car I cried HARD, the. whole. hour. home. Jayson greeted me in the garage and saw my swollen face. I then told him how bad my day was and sobbed for another hour straight. When I calmed down, he went upstairs and I stood in the kitchen, thinking I must be going crazy. I could have kept crying all night. Then, it hit me, I wasn’t crazy (well, maybe a little) i was just PREGNANT!! Of course, it was positive. I ran up to tell Jayson and when he saw the blue positive sign after only trying for a month, his first reaction was, ‘Wow,I must have Powerful Sperm!!!’ Then, his second reaction was, its blue, so ‘We are having a BOY!!’ Classic guy reaction!! 🙂 He got two girls. Go figure! 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
It’s blue so we’re having a boy! Haha, that’s an amazing dad-to-be reaction 🙂

I’m 7ish weeks (going to the OB next Friday), so I can relate to all this!
I took the test on a Friday but didn’t tell my hubby until Sunday night (we went to his parents that weekend and I didn’t want him to spill the beans). I wanted to do something creative, but just couldn’t think of anything. After a miscarriage and many rounds of infertility treatment (this was our last cycle before taking a break), I was more cautious than excited.
I had taken a picture of the test on my phone and after crying with each pregnancy FB announcement, I just showed him the picture. He asked whose it was and then he said ‘Wait…that is in our bathroom?!?!”
Brittany Dixon says
Ohhh, that’s so sweet and CONGRATS! Sending all the healthy baby and easy pregnancy vibes I can you’re way. <3

My husband was deployed when I got pregnant! (That sounds weird… he was home for R&R and THEN he went back, and I found out lol) Anyway, I just had to tell him right away, so as soon as he woke up I made him Skype and told him I took a test and was most likely pregnant. He was all like “cool!” lol He was so tired.

For our first pregnancy my husband was brushing his teeth while I tested. I saw one line, thought “that’s awfully close to the control line…” and then saw a second. I immediately looked at myself in the mirror and said “OMG I’m effing pregnant” at which time my husband dropped his toothbrush and kissed me. Romantic eh?
This time around I tested before he left for work and swore I saw a 2nd line. He had said for 2 weeks I was pregnant (we knew when I O’d and was very confident in his swimmers–having dealt with infertility I wasn’t as confident). He went to work and I tested a few hours again with a cheap CVS EPT test and within 2 minutes it said “pregnant”. I thought about waiting and telling him with our son and a chalkboard announcement “Big Brother” but instead I found myself calling him at work and announcing romantically “I’m pregnant” then sending the pic in a text. I have no patience.

Such a cute idea with the pickles and ice cream! Love it! Can’t wait to hear more!

Love these comments! I had purchased a bib that said “my big sister is a yellow lab” (our first “child” is a labby) wrapped it up and gave it to my hubs telling him it was an early birthday present since his bday was the next week. He got all teary and said “really? Did you take the test?!” 🙂

We have a thing for DQ blizzards, so with this pregnancy I asked Joe if we could eat there for dinner and I had the cashier put pink and blue skittles in his blizzard before bringing them to the table. At first he was like… no, this isn’t my blizzard… The guy replied, I’ll let you figure it out sir! He looked at me and said, You’re pregnant!!!

We had been trying to get pregnant for a year and a half, went to the doctor, went to the fertility specialist, took fertility drugs. I remember calling my RE the day before and asking her when could we come in to discuss the next steps (IUI or IVF) because I was definitely not pregnant AGAIN this month. She urged me to take a test the next morning just to have it on record. I thought “ok, waste of a test. I’ll just go pee on a $10 bill.” Well at 5:30am on 3/12/13, the test was VERY positive and I flung the door open and said “Holy sh**, I’m pregnant.” My husband wouldn’t fully accept it until I had the blood test done that afternoon. The RE’s office is right next to the bakery that hubs loves, so I popped in and grabbed a morning bun after I got confirmation. I wrote “Congratulations! We’ve got a bun in the oven!” and gave him the card and the bun after work.
And now we’re very impatiently waiting for our daughter to stop being so stubborn like her mommy and daddy and grace us with her presence (due date in 2 days)!
Brittany Dixon says
Ahhhh how wonderful!! Congrats! I know how tedious it is to be overdue. Hopefully you’re in labor right now! 😉

So cute, I love this I can’t wait to read more!
We had friends in town the weekend before and like you wine tasted weird and I was extremly emotional. I figured it was b/c my friend was pregnant and I had just gone to the ob and he said it would probably take my husband and I awhile to get pregnant. So I had been tracking my ovulation and taking my temp and all of those good things and on that Monday evening after they left I decided what the heck I will take the test since I wasn’t really sure when I was supposed to start. Not even 2 min into the test the plus sign showed up. At first I cried and then decided I should get confirmation from my husband that I wasn’t reading the test wrong. I walked down the stairs with the instuctions and the test and when I walked in the room he looked at me and asked if I was okay since he could tell I was crying. I then said, “are you ready to be a dad?” and he said, “Really! ” After a lot of tears he looked up at me and said “well what do we do now?”
Lindsay@Fuel My Family says
I always blurt it out. I always have big ideas but can never hold out to execute them! So I always just walk into the room and he knows the second he sees me goofy smile :).

I hate the beginning of pregnancy haha. With my history, positive tests were never reassuring to me – only ultrasounds with flickering heartbeats! I’m so glad I know that everything turned out OK w/ you and baby! <3
Lee says
Ha, I said, “Come in here and look at this test.”
Ali says
You sound so much like me haha with the worrying. After 3 months after I had my son, I was breastfeeding and noticed a hard lump. I googled it for ever and called my midwife. I went into the doctor’s office and she wanted to have an ultrasound just to make sure and I was in a panic for days until that was over. It was obviously fine and from breastfeeding. I need to learn to calm down and think rationally! I love hearing your pregnancy updates!
Sarah says
Oh, I’m the same way. Pregnancy never felt real to me the whole time. Haha. I also had elaborate plans to tell my husband the news, but I was boring. I took my test at 5:30 that morning and I remember covering my mouth in shock as I slowly watched one line become two… I couldn’t wait so I woke him up with the test in hand and said, “honey? I’m pregnant.”
The only cool thing is, it was Valentine’s Day. 🙂

My husband and I had been trying to get pregnant for almost 3 years. I actually had an appointment with a fertility specialist on a Tuesday morning last May. The weekend before I was talking to my BF and telling her some things that had been going on with me and she suggested I take a pregnancy test before my appointment. I took the test as soon as my husband left for work on that Monday morning. I couldn’t sit in the bathroom and wait for one more negative test, so I left the test on the sink and turned the lights off. I went back to get the test after a few minutes of pacing and when I looked at it I thought I saw 2 lines. I was in shock! I almost ran outside on the deck in only my t-shirt to see it better! (The thought of turning on a light didn’t occur to me!) 🙂 after the news sunk in, I got dressed and went out and bought a white Newborn onsie and iron-on letters. I wrote ‘Daddy’s Little Caddy’ on the front and spelled out our last name on the butt of the onsie. (My husband is a golfer.). When my husband got home I told him he had to go in the front bedroom and look out the window to see what had happened to the shrubs. (This room was empty, except for an ironing board I had on the floor because we were hoping to get to use it as a nursery!). He walked into the room and saw the onsie laying in the middle of the room on the ironing board! He looked at it and then turned around and scrunched his face up, like ‘What’s that?’ I half laughed and half cried as I announced ‘We’re going to have a baby!’ He threw down his snack and ran over to hug me! It was one of the best moments of my life! Pure joy!

Have you ever watched those old I Love Lucy shows? I grew up on them. Anyway, there’s a super adorable episode all about how she planned to tell Ricky and wanted it to be perfect and never gets the chance. She then surprised him at his night club. It’s about the cutest thing ever. He sings this “We’re Having a Baby Song” and I melt.
I’m going to spend my lunch break reading all of these cute stories 🙂

When I was pregnant with Miles, I ran a 16-mile race on Saturday. On Sunday, I realized I wasn’t abnormally PMS-y so I took a test. At first, it seemed like a no but the more it marinated (and more I obsessed), it looked like the possibility could be there. I decided to take a test Monday morning, first pee. It happened to be at 4 am, and it was a BFP. I pushed Mark, told him and went back to sleep. He thought it was a dream.

I took the pregnancy test on a morning where I had to head into work but my husband was off. The test was positive and I could not believe it. In a week would be our 3 year anniversary so I wanted to wait till then and tell him but I was too excited. I woke him up to tell him and what did he do, he said “knuckles” and gave me a fist bump and went back to sleep. A second later he woke back up and realized what I had said and that is when he jumped out of bed and saw the test for himself befre getting excited.
Avery @ YoungAspirations says
So weird about the cyst! I would have freaked out too – never heard of them being hormone related like that, so I guess it’s really great to have a friend who’s an OB! The day I knew I should be able to “safely” take a pregnancy tests without getting any false alarms, I naturally woke up at 6:00 am bursting at the seems! I was SO over waiting to test. When I got positive test, I sort of just stared at it in disbelief for a few minutes, before taking another one “just to check”. I got another positive and immediately ran back into the bedroom to wake up my husband. He was really groggy and I was half screaming at him and shaking him awake, so it took him a minute to wake up and realize what was happening, but was thrilled when he finally understood! We just sat in bed for the next couple hours talking about how crazy it was. We both ended up taking the day off and using it to celebrate our anniversary and run around town (now checking out all the baby sections). Next time I think I might want to think of a more fun way to tell him 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
How wonderful that you both got to take a day off to celebrate!! I’ll bet it will be a day you never forget. So special! (and congrats!! :))
Erika says
We had been going to the fertility clinic for awhile and we both knew what day I would be taking the test so it wasn’t a huge surprise. I took the test in the morning than walked into the bedroom and he had just turned the light off so I told him to turn the light back on because I had something to show him – he knew right away of course.

I’m pregnant with my first right now, and the way I told my husband was not at all romantic! He came to bed one Saturday night and I was sitting up FREAKING OUT because I was pretty sure I was pregnant. Don’t get me wrong, we’ve been together many years, we want kids, but it happened quickly and I just wasn’t sure I was ready! He was totally calm about it, and the next day I bought a pregnancy test. I took it at three in the morning when I woke up to pee (trying to wait until the morning for the hormones to be strongest), got a positive, got back in bed, and said, OMG, we’re pregnant! Then we both just went to sleep. It took a while to sink in, but now I’m almost 16 weeks and we’re both pretty excited 🙂
Brittany Dixon says
Congratulations!! We had been married and knew we wanted kids when we found out with Hailey, but it’s still a surreal moment and takes a few minutes to sink in knowing your life will never be the same… in the most wonderful way 😉

So fun! I had Brandon come to the bathroom to show him the stick. But he didn’t believe it at first because I had taken a test earlier in the week that had come back negative. Plus, we had literally JUST started trying. So it was a bit of a shock for both of us! 😉

I’m pregnant with my first and I just ran upstairs with the stick and box in hand and laid it in front of my husband without saying a word. I was just in too much shock myself. He looked at the items, then at me, then items. I just pointed to the directions and he took a moment to take it in and then we hugged and giggled like idiots.

I found out Oct. 29th and I told my husband Nov. 22. Yup, I waited that long.

Aww. Cute! I didn’t do a big reveal because I was worried about the pregnancy sticking. My cycle can’t be easily tracked by anyone, so I told him right after I took the test. Thankfully it’s gone smoothly thus far! I look forward to reading more of your story. 🙂
